Meet TTS Scholar Karla Helenius, Class of 2025-26

This month we are spotlighting Karla Helenius, one of our amazing 2025-2026 scholars. Karla is originally from Finland and is pursuing a Masters of Professional Studies in Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. We checked in with her to hear about how her studies are going. Here’s what she had to say.
How are your studies going? What has been most exciting and what are you looking forward to?
My studies are going very well and have been incredibly energizing. The most exciting part has been working at the intersection of strategy and consumer psychology, especially applying behavioral insights to real business challenges. I’m looking forward to continuing to deepen my knowledge in brand strategy and consumer insights.
What do you hope to do after your studies?
After graduation, I hope to work as a behavioral decision making consultant or in other consumer-focused roles. I want to combine my analytical background with creative, human-centered business decisions in an international setting and make the world a better place slowly but surely.
Tell us more about your experience as a Thanks To Scandinavia scholar. How has it impacted you? Feel free to share a specific anecdote/ experience if one comes to mind.
Being a Thanks To Scandinavia scholar has been deeply meaningful and carries a strong sense of responsibility. It reminds me that my education is part of a larger legacy of generosity between Scandinavia and the U.S., which motivates me to give back in the future. I am also truly grateful for the community this scholarship has given me. I found some of my best friends through being a scholar.
What do you enjoy outside of your studies?
Outside of academics, I enjoy staying active (Ithaca has beautiful gorges and hiking trails), exploring design and art (did you know Cornell has its own art museum on campus?), and traveling. I also value time with friends, especially cheering on the Cornell hockey team.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to study in the US and represent Finland in this community. My goal is to build a career that reflects both ambition and integrity, and eventually support future students as I’ve been supported.
